چکیده

This paper analyzes optimal contracting when an agent has private information before contracting and exerts hidden effort that stochastically affects the output. Additionally, the contract is constrained to satisfy the agent’s ex post participation. We highlight three features of this model. First, the agent faces countervailing incentives. Second, the separation of types is never optimal. Third, the optimal constant bonus rewarding success is distorted downward below its efficient level. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Moral hazard with discrete soft information

I study a simple model of moral hazard with soft information. The risk-averse agent takes an action and she alone observes the stochastic outcome; hence the principal faces a problem of ex post adverse selection. Some measure of truthful revelation is necessary to implement any effort, for which an audit is required. And for effort to be induced the agent must be offered a rent. There exists a ...

Limited liability constraints in adverse selection and moral hazard problems

This paper analyzes a principal-agent model in which the agent has private information before contracting with the principal and ex-post private decision. These inputs determine the random output accruing to the principal. We characterize the optimal menu of contracts between a risk-neutral principal and a risk-neutral agent when the agent has limited liability on his transfer or utility levels...

Ex ante moral hazard and ex post adverse selection with soft information

We reverse the standard sequence of a complete contracting model: first the agent takes an action, then she alone observes the stochastic outcome and sends a message to the principal. Presuming of the validity of the Revelation Principle, the optimal (direct) mechanism with audit requires a two-part tariff to be offered to the agent, which weakens the ex ante incentives for effort. We then esta...

IMF Conditionality

This paper presents a principal-agent model of IMF conditional lending, in the aftermath of a “capital-account” liquidity crisis. We show that traditional ex-post conditionality can be e¤ective in safeguarding the Fund’s resources, allowing for the provision of e¢cient emergency lending and reducing ine¢cient ex-ante credit rationing if the capital out‡ow which triggers the crisis is not excess...

The Value of Information in an Agency Model with Moral Hazard

In a principal-agent environment with moral hazard and symmetric information, having or acquiring a more informative technology lowers the cost to implement a given action. Contracting may occur after or before the principal learns her technology. We show that when the principal has or will acquire private information about her technology, (i) with ex post contracting, the value of information ...
